ISWAT Virtual Conference Sep 27 - Oct 1, 2021
H3-01 Section SEP Model Validation held two sessions on Sep 27 & 28 to update on progress of the validation framework, discuss model statuses, metrics and validation approaches, and next steps. These sessions were highly successful, with 13 SEP models providing predictions of 1 or more of the challenge SEP events to build and test the validation framework. Graham Barnes (NWRA) gave an excellent talk on selecting appropriate metrics and approaches to validation.
Video Recordings:
- Sep 27: Validation framework update and modeler presentations (video, chat)
- Sep 28: Metrics talk and data set discussion (video, chat)
- Update on validation framework progress (Katie Whitman)
- View an example validation report for UMASEP-10 produced for the ISWAT session (reports were produced for all participating models)
- Validation Methods: Some Lessons Learned from Solar Flare Forecasting (Graham Barnes)
- NOAA SWPC Proton Forecast Performance and Skill (Hazel Bain)
- iPATH presentation on suprathermal seed spectra and results for challenge (Junxiang Hu)
- SEPMOD multipoint study simulating CMEs and SEPs within the whole inner heliosphere (Erika Palmiero)
- REleASE advance warning times for Mars round trip travel from Earth-Sun and Mars-Sun L1 Lagrange points (Arik Posner)
- The Solar Radiation Hemisphere: Filling a critical gap for protons, UMASEP, ESPERTA, pps, and REleASE (Arik Posner)
- Trouble with the sensor. Why there is a need for accurate energetic proton measurements for model validation. (Arik Posner) Slides Paper
- Work to address unphysical SEP event onsets in GOES measurements(Piers Jiggens)
Roadmap Papers: ISWAT is encouraging all sections to write papers to support the ISWAT-COSPAR Heliophysics Roadmap. Section H3-01 will prepare two papers:
- Paper summarizing SEP models currently developed in the research community
(Outline) - Paper summarizing previous validation of SEP models as reported in the literature (current state-of-the-art) + overview of this ongoing community SEP model validation effort (Outline)
- General ISWAT roadmap papers page
