Space Weather Bootcamp 2018

Space Weather REDI Bootcamp is a week-long space weather training presented by the NASA GSFC scientists (presenters include, but are not limited to, the CCMC staff). These tutorials provide participants with a basic knowledge of space weather and forecasting, without going into detailed physics, and acquaint them with the applications of space weather.

While the bootcamp training is geared to undergraduate students, it will be beneficial for anyone interested in broadening their space weather knowledge - graduate students, scientists, engineers, educators, mission operators, and competitive high school students.

Dates and location:

Bootcamp will be held on June 4 - 8, 2018.
The week-long bootcamp will start on Monday afternoon (June 4th). Attending individual days is possible but not recommended.

Bootcamp will be held at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (bldg. 21).

Bootcamp Application

  • Apply to attend the Bootcamp by filling out this Google application form.

  • Note that, once we receive your Bootcamp application (see above), applicant's supervisor/adviser will be asked to fill out a brief recommendation form.

  • Bootcamp application deadline: April 10. Please note that both the application and recommendation forms above should be submitted by the applicatioin deadline, so please apply early.

Bootcamp Logistics

The Bootcamp is free, however ALL hotel and transportation costs and arrangements are the responsibility of the bootcamp participant. The CCMC does NOT have funds to support any participant unless he/she has been accepted as our summer intern.

International participants:

International participants will have to ensure the necessary documentation and NASA badging, so (unless you are a permanent US resident) please make sure your country is not on the Designated Countries list, with no access to NASA. Please apply to attend the bootcamp as early as possible since this will allow you to get a recommendation letter, secure a visa (if needed) and apply for a NASA badge by the end of April (badge application deadline for foreign nationals).

2017 Bootcamp agenda & presentations:

Note(*): There will be no 'research track' training this year.
If interested in attending week 2 (intensive forecaster training) please contact Anna Chulaki.

Bootcamp audience and highlights

Bootcamp audience includes undergraduate and graduate students, scientists, engineers, educators, mission operators, and competitive high school students.

This training draws on the experience of the unique research-based space weather forecasting team at the CCMC and features space weather tools (such as the Integrated Space Weather Analysis System iSWA) and space environment models installed at the CCMC. It has an interactive component and includes hands-on exercises and homework assignments.

Related summer NASA Internships 2018:
CCMC also offers a variety of summer internships at the NASA GSFC, with the application deadline of March 1, 2018.
