2012 CCMC Student Research Contest
We are pleased to announce the results of the first CCMC Student Research Contest:
Magnetosphere:
First Prize: Emily R. Hyatt, "Projected Ionospheric Location and Travel Time of Kelvin-Helmholtz Instabilities Occurring at the Low Latitude Boundary Layer"
Emily completed her project as an undergraduate in the Engineering Physics program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is now pursuing her Master's degree. Her advisor is Dr. Katariina Nykyri. Emily will present her results at the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) workshop in Snowmass, Colorado in June 2012. Emily is preparing to submit her research to the Journal of Geophysical Research!
Second Prize: Ava S. Dupre, "Region-1 and Chapman-Ferraro Current Variations with Solar Wind Conditions"
Ava, an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan, is pursuing a degree in Earth System Science and Engineering with a Space Weather concentration. Her mentor is Dr. Mike Liemohn.
Honorable Mention: "Comparison of Kelvin-Helmholtz Initiation Between In-situ Observations and Global OpenGGCM Inspired Initial Conditions" by Thomas Moore, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Advisor: Dr. Katariina Nykiri
Solar and Heliosphere:
First Prize: Corinna Gressl, "Comparison of MHD Simulations of the Solar Wind with In-Situ Measured Plasma and Magnetic Field Parameters at 1 AU"
Corinna completed her project as a part of her Master's degree thesis from the Institute of Physics in Graz, Austria. She is now pursuing a doctoral degree. Her advisors are Dr. Astrid Veronig and Dr. Manuela Temmer. Corinna will present her research at the Solar, Heliospheric, and Interplanetary Environment (SHINE) workshop in Maui, Hawaii in June 2012.
Second Prize: Daniel J. Emmons, "Ensemble Forecasting of Coronal Mass Ejections Using the WSA-ENLIL with Coned Model"
Dan, a recent graduate from the Air Force Institute of Technology with a Master’s degree in Applied Physics, completed his research under the guidance of Lt Col Ariel Acebal. Dan has submitted his project for publication in the AGU Space Weather Journal!
Honorable Mention: "The Varying Solar Corona over a Solar Cycle" by Christina E. Burns, University of Michigan. Advisor: Dr. Mike Liemohn
