SW REDI Boot Camp 2013

After two intensive weeks of learning everything from Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) to auroras, 32 participants, including interns, professors, graduate students, and NASA staff, have successfully completed the first Space Weather Training Camp, taking the first steps to become space weather forecasters. The camp is part of the Space Weather Research, Education, and Development Initiative (SW REDI) developed by the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC).

Three previous space weather interns assisted the boot campers with assessments while experienced space weather NASA staff lectured about all the Space Weather Research Center (CCMC/SWRC) has to offer.

CME analysis was a popular topic and the boot campers became pros at iSWA, the CCMC/SWRC’s database. The participants had a wide range of experience in heliophysics, from never taking a physics class all the way to PhDs in astrophysics and beyond. Now, they are off to share what they have learned. Some traveled locally from Arlington while others crossed the Pacific Ocean from South Korea in order to participate in this unique opportunity at NASA.
