Simulation Grid Choices for BATSRUS Model of the Magnetosphere
CCMC is offering several grids for BATSRUS runs using 8x8x8-cell blocks:
-
Overview (SWPC real time) grid with 1,007,616 cells:
Simulation box size:
-224 RE < x < 32 RE
|z|, |y| < 128
The finest resolution for this grid in the near-Earth magnetosphere is 1/4 RE. -
Dayside grid with 1/16 RE resolution and 18,558,89976 cells
Simulation box size:
-224 RE < x < 32 RE
|z|, |y| < 128
The finest resolution for this grid in the near-Earth and dayside magnetosphere is 1/16 RE.
CCMC is offering three grids for BATSRUS runs using 6x6x6-cell blocks:
-
Grid with 755,136 cells:
Simulation box size:
-250 RE < x < 33 RE
|z|, |y| < 48
The finest resolution for this grid is 1/4 RE around the earth. Finest resolution in near-tail and magnetopause is 0.5 RE.

-
Grid with 1,958,688 cells:
Simulation box size:
-250 RE < x < 33 RE
|z|, |y| < 48
The finest resolution for this grid in near-tail and dayside magnetopause is 1/4 RE.

-
High-resolution grid with 9,623,552 cells:
Simulation box size:
-352 RE < x < 32 RE
|z|, |y| < 96
The finest resolution for this grid in near-Earth is 1/4 RE and 1/2 RE in the dayside and near-Earth nightside magnetosphere and magnetosheath.
You can examine the grids in more detail by viewing the results of a particular run and choosing the "Show simulation grid" option.
Each grid has a simulation run duration limit between 24 hours (1 day) and 168 hours (1 week).
For simulations longer than a day only lower resolution grids may be available.
If you require a special grid, please specify so in the "Special Request" box at the end of run submission by referring to a previous run using the desired grid or by describing the resolution required for a spatial region. You can also contact the CCMC staff with your request.
