GEM 2009 Baseline Model Comparison
About
The 2009 GEM Baseline Model Comparison was designed to measure the response of magnetospheric models to increasingly negative solar wind Bz levels. No observation data are being used in this study. The study consisted of an 8-hour and an12-hour simulation run for each model.
Outputs are the modeled cross-polarcap potential in the ionosphere (CPCP) and the magnetopause standoff distance measured as the position of the open-closed magnetic field boundary at the subsolar point (mpnose).
The solar wind input is artificial:
N=5/cm^2, T=100000 K, Vx=-400 km/s, Vy=Vz=0 km/s, Bx==By=0 nT were held constant
whereas Bz (in nT) varied as follows:
-5 for 0:00 h < t <=2h
-10 for 2:10 h < t <= 4 h
-20 for 4:10 h < t <= 6 h
-30 for 6:10 h < t <= 8 h
-40 for 8:10 h < t <= 10 h
-50 for >= 10:10 h

8-hour runs were performed with the solar wind fed in at X=33 R_E upstream boundary (OpenGGCM, SWMF, LFM).
12-hour runs were possible with the upstream boundary at at X=60 R_E (OpenGGCM, SWMF).
