Auroral oval boundary study
- Data Source: FUV auroral imagers on TIMED/GUVI and DMSP/SSUSI provide global auroral coverage (1/2 to 1/3 of the auroral oval). The auroral products from the FUV data include maps of electron energy flux (Q) and mean energy (E0), peak E region density and height, height integrated conductance, hemispheric power, equatorward auroral boundary (swath and global), poleward boundary (swath and global). The auroral data products are available 2002-2007 (GUVI), 2004-present (SSUSI on DMSP F16), 2006-present (SSUSI on F17) and 2009-present (SSUSI on F18). Such a database provides a good opportunity for validating auroral specification under different geomagnetic activities.
- Boundary definition: The auroral boundaries in the GUVI and SSUSI data products are defined as the location where the electron energy flux at a fixed level: 0.2 ergs/s/cm2. There are two steps in obtaining the global boundaries. The 1st step is to get the swath boundary by finding the auroral pixels at the fix flux level in a measured auroral image or Q map. The 2nd step is to compare the equatorward swath boundaries on the nightside (18-00-06 MLT) with the global boundaries at the same flux level from the GUVI based auroral model [Zhang and Paxton, 2008, JASTP] and calculate the associated errors. The global boundary with the lowest error is selected as the true global boundary associated with the auroral image.
- Model validation: It is important to note that there are other definitions of auroral boundaries, such as gradient based, region based (open-closed), and magnetic field stretch. These definitions are useful for various purposes. However, the most important is the electron energy flux which determines the strength of MI coupling as well as the magnitude of thermosphere response. Comparing boundaries from simulations at a fixed flux level with the GUVI and SSUSI boundaries will be one of the key steps to take.
- Recommendation: The auroral products from global simulations need to be converted to the electron energy flux. The boundaries need to be derived using the same method for GUVI and SSUSI boundaries. Finally, a number of magnetic storms should be selected to cover different solar wind and geomagnetic conditions, quiet, weak, modulate and intense magnetic storms, different seasons, solar wind conditions (CME, CIR, high solar wind speed, etc.). The simulation performance can be thoroughly evaluated this way.
