User Needs

  • Effects of the ionosphere on GPS positioning application:
    Position Error for GNSS Users (Errors in TEC affect single frequency GNSS positioning)


Working Team Goals

  • Establish metrics agreed upon by the community
  • Evaluate where we stand with atmospheric density prediction
  • Provide a benchmark against which future models can be assessed against

Challenges to address

  • Uncertainty in observations and models
  • Metrics for specific applications
  • Ground truth for evaluations of data assimilation models

Lessons learned from previous assessments of TEC prediction

  • Difference in vTEC between different data sources
  • Difference in range for TEC calculations between models and data sets
  • 1-day quiet time values are not enough as a quiet time reference to quantify storm impact
  • Lack of user input in defining appropriate metrics for specific applications
