Neutral Density and Orbit Determination at LEO Working Team

User Needs

  • Prediction of atmospheric density to minimize drag errors in orbit determination (OD) and propagation for purposes of collision avoidance or re-entry predictions
  • Model uncertainty information that can be formulated into correction matrices to the OD-produced covariances in order to represent the atmospheric density model errors properly

Working Team Goals

  • Establish metrics agreed upon by the community
  • Evaluate where we stand with atmospheric density prediction
  • Provide a benchmark against which future models can be assessed against

Working Team Deliverables

Physical Quantities and Metrics for Model-Data Comparison

    Neutral density in the altitude range 200 – 800 km:
  • Daily mean
  • Orbit averaged
  • Model sampled at satellite locations, binned 5° along track
  • Global mean (J. Emmert: global daily mean of TLE-inferred densities)
  • Mean, standard deviation, and RMS of observed-to-modeled density ratios, as well as correlation coefficient
    Orbits of LEO satellites

Available Data Sources

  • Accelerometer/GPS measurements by CHAMP/GRACE/GOCE/SWARM
  • Global mean neutral density survey by J. Emmert
  • Daily mean density at 800km from Starlette and Stella
  • Standard versions to be provided by E. Doornbos, S. Bruinsma, and J. Emmert
  • POE (Precise Orbit Ephemeris):
    - Aqua/Aura/Terra provided by NASA FDF
    - Cryosat-2/Sentinels at 800 km,
    - Tandem/TerraSAR-X at 500 km to be provided by S. Bruinsma
