Alexander Balikhin is a summer student working at the CCMC from July to September 2006. He is working on a database and web-based interface for the CCMC Runs on Request system using MySQL and PHP.
The CCMC allows scientists to submit requests to run various models and then displays the simulation results on the web. Since the CCMC started offering this service it has received over 1000 run
requests and displays the results of these runs on the Internet. Alex's work
involved developing a database that displays these results efficiently using MySQL and making it accessible via the web using PHP.
Alex's Project was divided into several stages:
- Creating a MySQL database and loading all the data onto it.
- Fixing any corruption that occurred in the data while it was loaded onto MySQL.
- Write a user-friendly php web-based interface that allows for the database to be accessed and searched quickly.
- Write html scripts that contain the the php interface and correspond to the layout style of the rest of the CCMC website.
- Write kornshell scripts that will update the MySQL database with new Runs on Request data.
After Alex finished his work on the LAMP software bundle, he was assigned a new project that involved creating a 3D hologram-like animation for one of the CCMC's runs on request.
Alex currently attends Imperial College London where he is studying Mathematics and expects to graduate in 2009.
